EXPLORE MOUNTAINS

What’s the offer?

If you are visiting Bulgaria, why not use the chance to experience for yourselves the beauty of its mountains? My offer is to take you for an invigorating hike along the lesser-known paths of the mountains around Sofia – Vitosha, Lyulin and Plana. Or we could go farther away to Rila (a full-day trip or longer), Pirin (at least two days) or Stara Planina (a full-day trip or longer).

For single-day trips, we may go to any of the less frequented starting points for hikes in the Vitosha mountain like Kladnitsa, Zheleznitsa or Vladaya. We may also go to a more popular starting point like Zlatni mostove or Aleko and then choose a quiet route.

We will hope to see some wild life – deer roes and does, wild goats, hares, birds. Depending on the season, we may pick wild berries on the way or negotiate snow paths. Almost any weather can be fun as long as you bring good hiking boots and appropriate clothes. Prepare for an offline day out of town that will charge your batteries and make every bite and sip at day’s end taste great.

I’ll try to tailor the hiking experience to your level and physical condition. Please, have in mind that a warm hat, sunscreen and an adventurous spirit always come in handy in the mountain. And don’t forget to use the calendar to check availability and book your preferred dates.

Pick-up service

You don’t know how to get to the mountains around Sofia? I will take you there at no additional cost from a central Sofia location. For longer trips, please ask about transfer options.

Value for money

My wish is that at the end of each adventure you have added invaluable memories and a better understanding of yourselves.

Tailored hikes

Be open about how experienced you are as a hiker and what’s your current physical condition (“Leave me a note” in the contact form) and together we’ll try to make the most out of it.

Combining experiences

Thanks to a network of partners and friends, I can offer you additional options like mountain biking and kayaking (seasonal), and refer you to cosy places to relax at the end of a hike.
About me

Hi, I am Martin – the person behind the “Explore-mountains” initiative. I am currently balancing a job in the IT industry and project management with something I truly love – a more authentic contact with people in the nature. My journey has taken me so far to over 25 countries on four continents, including India, South Africa, Morocco, Austria (the Alps), Portugal, the USA and others. Having worked as a skiing and windsurf instructor, I’ve now continued my life trip with a year-long course to become an accredited mountain guide. This adds new skills to a passion that started over 25 years and thousands of kilometers ago with my early family hikes.

Pirin moments

The great Bulgarian spiritual teacher from the early 20th century Petar Danov claims that Pirin is a mountain to invigorate and energize the soul. It does exactly that with its numerous glacier lakes, marble peaks and amazing views.

Rila moments

The patriarch of modern Bulgarian literature Ivan Vazov wrote a whole collection of poems called In the fold of Rila to honour his love and awe of the highest mountain on the Balkans. As he claims in the poem about the Rila monastery, “Now I’m at home”.
